Measuring “Forever Chemicals” in Cosmetic Products

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a broad group of chemicals used in a diverse range of commercial and industrial applications. Their exceptional chemical stability and surface-active properties, which make them so appealing from a product development perspective, also make PFAS highly resistant to environmental and biological degradation, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals.” As a result, they have been detected in unintended locations, including drinking water supplies and human blood. Cosmetics have received recent attention as a possible source of PFAS exposure. This presentation will discuss the analytical challenges and key considerations involved in investigating PFAS in cosmetic products as this emerging area of research continues to develop.
