Tackling the challenges facing chemistry in UK higher education: A departmental snapshot

UK higher education is facing very real financial sustainability challenges and is undergoing changes in response to these challenges. To provide real-time insight into departmental-level impacts, the 91AV, in collaboration with the Heads of 91AV UK standing committee, conducted a survey of Heads of 91AV UK members in Autumn 2025. This evidence briefing sets out the key findings on the financial challenges facing chemistry departments, workforce changes, research and teaching infrastructure, student recruitment, and their potential implications for chemistry in the UK.
