Priorities for shaping the UK’s Industrial Strategy

16 March 2017 09:00-13:00, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
Guest of Honour: Iain Wright MP, Chair, Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee
This seminar will discuss the priorities ahead for Government’s forthcoming industrial strategy, which is expected to focus on opportunities for improving long-term growth and innovation with the aim of making UK industry more competitive.

Delegates will consider key questions around the strategy’s design - including whether it should have a sectoral approach or broader objectives such as competiveness - and will assess its possible implications for skills, investment, research and regional development across the UK economy. The discussion will also be informed by the challenges and opportunities facing key UK industries following the EU referendum result.

The conference is scheduled to facilitate discussion on the findings of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee’s inquiry into Industrial Strategy, which is expected to report early next year.

Sessions are expected to bring together senior policymakers with representatives from a wide range of relevant industries - such as aerospace, agriculture, automotive, construction, defence, energy, electronics and life sciences - as well as investors, suppliers, enterprise partnerships, trade associations, consultants, academics, trade unions and banks, together with representatives from the national and trade press.

At this early stage we are delighted that Iain Wright MP, Chair, Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee has kindly agreed to deliver a keynote address at this event.

Dr Mark Dittmer-Odell, Head of Sector Development, Confederation of British Industry; Dick Elsy, Chief Executive Officer, High Value Manufacturing Catapult; Professor Steve Evans, Director of Research in Industrial Sustainability, Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge; Tim Frenneaux, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership; Professor Richard Harris, Professor of Economics, Business School, Durham University; Lee Hopley, Chief Economist, EEF; Martin McTague, Policy Director, Federation of Small Businesses and Ann Watson, Managing Director, Semta have also agreed to speak.

Lord Cavendish of Furness, Member, All-Party Parliamentary Manufacturing Group has kindly agreed to chair a session at this seminar.
