The Rise and Fall of Probiotics - Where Now?

9 March 2017 18:00-20:00, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
Over the last twenty years, probiotics, often in the form of fermented milk drinks and yoghurts, have become a familiar sight to consumers. But are these products disappearing from the supermarket shelves? In this talk Linda Thomas will discuss how the category has evolved and how health claim regulations introduced a decade ago have effectively led to a ban on use of the term ‘probiotic’ in commercial communications. The talk will explain the impact of this on industry and will take a look at the science behind the probiotic concept, giving examples to show the breadth of research and the different mechanisms of activity involved. The current interest in the gut microbiota and its influence on health and disease will be discussed and the talk will conclude with speculations on the future for probiotics.
