Dealing with the issue of road runoff and water quality – sources, monitoring, impact and solutions

20 January 2026 09:00-16:00, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
This one-day meeting will address the issue of road runoff and its impact on water quality in the aquatic environment from an industry, regulatory and academic perspective.

Surface water runoff washes into the environment every time it rains. Road runoff degrades water quality by carrying pollutants from vehicles, roads, and atmospheric deposition into waterways. This is polluted with microplastics, trace metals, hydrocarbons and other organic pollutants which enter our rivers. Road runoff is responsible for 18% of waterbody failures in England (86% of the country’s inland water bodies fail to meet targets).

This event brings together leading academics, regulators and industry experts to discuss current issues on how water quality is impacted by road runoff and how to deal with these issues going forward.

The meeting will be of interest to those involved in the following sectors:
  • Academia and early career researchers
  • Research organisations
  • Water industry personnel
  • Regulators – EA, NRW, SEPA, NIEA, DWI
  • Water engineers and environmental consultants
  • Ecologists and toxicologists
  • Analytical equipment and service providers
  • Regulatory affairs and compliance
  • Non-Governmental Organisations – Rivers and Wildlife Trusts etc.
