McBain Medal 2025

30 January 2026 10:00-16:40, West Midlands, United Kingdom

Introduction
SCI's Colloid & Surface 91AV Group and RSC's Colloid & Interface Science Group are delighted to announce that Dr Gemma-Louise Davies of the University of Birmingham is the 2025 recipient of the McBain Medal. Gemma-Louise’s research programme focuses on the design of colloidal materials, where she has made major contributions to the development of nanocomposites through a highly interdisciplinary approach. Her work has delivered new insights into the fundamental structure–property relationships of colloidal MRI contrast agents, leading to the creation of exceptionally effective positive and negative MRI colloids. Building on this foundation, she has advanced biomedical applications by developing non-invasive techniques for monitoring drug delivery, enabling a new generation of guided therapies. Her research also addresses environmental concerns, uncovering key mechanisms of nanoparticle toxicity with implications for environmental safety and regulation.
